Media Module Momentum & Office Hours
Yesterday I posted about that I have decided to restart my Drupal life and focus my efforts on a few selected areas where I feel I will be much more effective, both for my own needs and for the community at large.
One of those areas is the Media module for which I already have been quite involved, but been on a break from recently. The last few days I have spent some time catching up on what has happened the last few months, and WOW that's a lot. The issue queue is brimming with activity and there are plenty of patches to test that adds many missing features we all want.
I am still catching up since so much has happened, but two patches - File title is uneditable (for the required File Entity module) and Allow media file's fields to be edited in a modal or after upload in the media widget quickly grabbed my interest. The first makes it possible to change the title of the uploaded file. Right now it is automatically stored as the physical filename of the file and that is not always what you want. The second adds an Edit button on the node edit page for each media file. Click it and you are able to edit the title (if the first mentioned patch is applied) and any other fields you have added for the file type.
This is just great improvements to the workflow when adding media to a site. Before the only option you had was to go to www.example.com/admin/content/file, try and find the file and then change it. Lots of clicks, time and frustration will be saved thanks to these two patches.
Strong Momentum
Judging from what I have seen so far on the project page and from the long conversation I had last night with Dave Reid, Gus Austin and Aaron Winborn in the #drupal-media IRC channel, the momentum is definitely growing. Everyone is buzzing with ideas, energy and ambition to really make things happen.
While discussions still is rather informal about how to organize things, better promote the Media Initiative and get people more involved, it is quickly progressing. Dave Reid is really doing an awesome job leading and driving everything and it makes it easy for everyone else to jump right in and help with whatever we can pitch in with.
Did I mention that Media module now is used by more than 30,000 sites?
Media Office Hours
You can already find many of us lurking around in the #drupal-media channel most of the time, but we would also like to improve on this by starting scheduled official Office Hours where focus is to help and guide new users and everyone else that want to help improving the media support in Drupal.
The first official office hour session is going to happen Thursday the 19th of this month at 8pm UTC. in the #drupal-media IRC channel. If you are new to using IRC, drupal.org has a great guide for you.
Check Drupal media IRC meeting and office hours where you will find more info as well as an agenda.
See you there...
PS: I am going to keep posting about what is happening with media in Drupal, some will also be added to Planet Drupal, but not every post. If you don't want to miss any post, the best way of being notified is to subscribe to the RSS feed.
