Updating Drupal Mill and Migrating from Blog Module

I have fallen way behind on keeping Drupal Mill updated. Currently it is running on 7.4 and contribs are of course also of the same age...

First task before I start working on new features is then to get everything updated to current, hopefully that will go without any issues.

Cleaning up the installation

When I launched the site in late 2010, Drupal 7 wasn't even released in a full version. Contribs was also in a shaky state. Since then a lot has happened. The adoption has been phenomenal and according to the usage statistics there are now over a quarter of a million sites running on Drupal 7. In reality there are many more since a lot of live sites don't ping home.

Half a year ago I did an overview of the status of the top 50 modules and it was really a mixed bag when it came to what state they where in. Since then a lot has happened, the quality and the number of full releases have really caught on. Check out webchick's drupalcontribstatus.com for real time status of the top 60 Drupal 7 modules. You will find many of your favorites there.

Obviously this also means that I need to make quite a few changes to Drupal Mill to better take advantage of what I have learned the last year and the modules that now are available to me. So, therefor I will spend the next few days/weeks doing just that so the site has a solid foundation for all the new features I want to build for it.

Bye Bye Blog Module

One other thing I want to do is to disable the core Blog module. Not that it is that bad, but the features it offers is of no use to me anymore since Views and other modules offers much better flexibility. Plus, custom content types plays much better with Features...

That, of course, means I will have to deal with migrating the existing blog content (this post included) to the new custom content type. I'm hoping that the Node Convert module will help making that a painless exercise. Stay tuned for an update about how that goes.

Suppose I better get started on this now.
